EPOS: The Central Point of Management for SAP Basis Administrators

With over 20 specialized apps, EPOS automates recurring tasks in SAP Basis. But how can EPOS be summarized in a way that is both application-oriented and to the point? We landed on “Central Point of Management.”

Evolving IT solutions: EPOS as a modern response

IT solutions and products are constantly evolving - whether through ongoing development and new functionalities or because customer needs and application scenarios continue to change.

What does EPOS stand for? The name and its origins

EPOS is short for Empirius Planning and Operations Suite. Inspired by Ansible by Red Hat, it was initially developed under the internal project name "BlueSible."

From "BlueSible" to a powerful automation solution

As part of this evolution, we adapted Ansible’s definition to better describe EPOS’s purpose:

"EPOS is an automation tool for orchestrating, configuring, and administering SAP systems. It combines software distribution, ad-hoc command execution, and configuration management."

Both Ansible and EPOS belong to the Enterprise Management and System Management categories - established terms within the IT industry.

From "Central Point of Truth" to "Central Point of Management"

This shift was driven by our customers - their input was the key factor. Originally, EPOS was called the "Central Point of Truth" because it provided a complete, transparent view of all deployed SAP systems and components.

However, through discussions - especially with EPOS power users - a more fitting description emerged.

EPOS as a centralized management solution for SAP Basis Teams

This led to a strategic shift: from "Central Point of Truth" to "Central Point of Management." This shift reflects EPOS’s capabilities, which include:

  • Managing SAP systems
  • Controlling and automating SAP Basis and infrastructure tasks
  • Monitoring system changes through reporting apps

These capabilities make EPOS a versatile management solution for SAP Basis and infrastructure teams.

Why "Central Point"?

The term "Central Point" reflects the fact that EPOS is managed from a single, centralized location. Its full potential becomes even more apparent when multiple apps are used together.
