End of SAP LaMa® – What now? Meet modular alternative EPOS

With SAP announcing the end of the SAP Business Suite in 2027 – including SAP ERP ECC – SAP Landscape Management (SAP LaMa) is also being retired. SAP Basis Administrators currently relying on LaMa now need to evaluate alternative solutions.

What does the end of SAP LaMa mean for SAP Basis teams?

To date, no official successor to SAP LaMa has been announced. This raises urgent questions for Basis teams: how will key functions like system copies, start/stop management, or automated patch management be handled moving forward?

At Empirius, we've been addressing these concerns for some time. Two core questions are top of mind:

- Will a true SAP LaMa successor emerge?

- Can SAP LaMa be fully or partially replaced by EPOS?

EPOS is our modular platform for automating core SAP Basis processes. The suite combines over 15 specialised apps that optimise the efficiency, security and transparency of SAP system landscapes!

SAP LaMa in review: a powerful tool reaching its end

SAP LaMa has been around for decades, backed by millions of lines of code and several shifts in development focus.

Built for global enterprise customers, it’s powerful but not exactly agile.

In today’s world of SAP cloud migration, DevOps, and hybrid environments, this lack of flexibility becomes a serious drawback. The need for a scalable, future-ready SAP automation solution is clear.

Will there be a true SAP LaMa successor? Here's how we see it:

In theory, SAP LaMa could be rebuilt – in practice, the effort and investment would be enormous.  So while it would be technically possible, it is practically unlikely.

At Empirius, we believe a 1:1 SAP LaMa replacement won’t happen. But modular SAP tools that replicate essential LaMa features — more flexibly and cost-effectively — already exist.

EPOS as a modular SAP LaMa alternative: what’s possible?

With our EPOS automation Suite, we offer a modular solution that handles specific SAP system management tasks – many of which SAP LaMa supported. Plus, EPOS goes beyond SAP to support non-SAP environments as well.

Highlights of EPOS functionality include:

EPOS App BlueCopy – A proven tool for fully automated SAP system copies. It's already being used by many SAP LaMa customers for years due to its reliability, functionality, and cost-effectiveness.

SAP Kernel & SAP HANA Update Apps – Designed for automated SAP kernel patch management and SAP HANA updates.

AnyDB Updates – Supports automated patching across databases like MaxDB, Sybase, DB2, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server – replicating essential LaMa functionality.

Start/Stop Management – Enables automated start and stop of SAP systems and databases.

Comprehensive Reporting - EPOS positions itself as a central point of management. From a single location, you gain full visibility into what’s running where and how across all your SAP systems – enabling you to oversee operations effectively and manage them to your advantage.

The EPOS Suite is continuously developed in close collaboration with our users and regularly enhanced with new capabilities. Optional UserExits allow for tailored customization – delivering scalable solutions to fit specific landscape needs.
